Fritz Leonhardt,
a German bridge construction specialist, once said:

bridge-building

                          “temples and bridges
            are the most impressive
                                 monuments of mankind!”

Robert Maillart, Calatrava, Menn, Eastwood, The bridges of madison county

The constructions made of stone and iron
constitute an interesting documentation on the
  century-long development of bridges and
demonstrate the craftmanship of the old days.
Today, hardly any bridges are built of brick
or stone. Thus these historical constructions
count among the master works of engineering
of that time. The people building these
bridges, were highly competent and perfected
  the traditional construction of stonebridges
creating a harmony between nature and
  man`s work.
  Whoever thinks that technical constructions
destroy the beauty of nature, will know
better when looking at the bridges in Filisur
or Langwies (Switzerland) or the four-storied
viaduct, made of 26`021`000 bricks, in
  Eastern Germany.

As freelance advertising professional and keen photographer I have made - over the years - photographic studies of bridges in Europe. I took pictures of  more than 1155 bridges between Portugal, Northern Germany and Hungary,  and there is now a collection of several thousands of slides in the size of 6x7 cm (2,4”x2.8”), available for photograph and advertising agencies, book and calendar publishers, tourist information offices and everybody else, who is interested in this special branche of architecture photography.

Bridges connect, bridges join, bridges span over valleys and gorges, and bridges bring
peoples closer together. Nowadays the concept of “The Bridge” has a special importance
for us, because people have to learn once again, how to build “bridges”!
